Tank blanketing, also called gas blanketing or padding, is a technique used in various industrial processes to protect the contents of a storage tank or vessel from undesirable environmental conditions.  The primary purpose of tank blanketing is to maintain a controlled and stable atmosphere inside the tank.  The process typically involves introducing an inert gas, such as nitrogen or argon, into the space above the liquid or product in the tank.  This inert gas forms a protective layer or blanket over the substance, displacing or diluting the oxygen and other potentially harmful gases.  The pressure and flow of the inert gas are controlled to maintain the desired conditions inside the tank.

Tank blanketing systems often include pressure regulators, flow control valves, pressure relief devices, and sensors to monitor and control the atmosphere within the tank.  Blanketing can be applied to various types of storage tanks, including those used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and petroleum industries.

Tank blanketing can prevent

  • Oxidation  -  Many substances, especially chemicals and certain liquids, can react with oxygen in the air, leading to corrosion, degradation, or spoilage.  Blanketing with an inert gas helps displace oxygen, reducing the risk of oxidation.
  • Flammability  -  In some cases, the contents of a tank may be flammable or explosive when exposed to air.  Blanketing with an inert gas reduces the oxygen concentration, making it less likely for a flammable atmosphere to form.
  • Moisture and Contamination  -  Blanketing can help prevent moisture or airborne contaminants from entering the tank, which is crucial for maintaining the purity of certain products or chemicals.
