washerWashers give a smooth supporting surface for the fastener.  Without the washer, bolts, nuts and screws could be pulled into the material.  It also gives a flush surface during a bolt tightening procedure to create the proper seal.

types of washers

  • Flat washer - This washers are unhardened and meant for general use.
  • SAE flat washer - Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) flat washers is smaller, lighter washers use with fine threads bolts and nuts.
  • USS flat washer - United States Standard (USS) flat washers are wider and use with coarse thread nuts and bolts.

  • Ogee washer - These washers are designed to prevent bolt heads and nuts from being pulling into the wood. Normally used in dock and wood construction.
