# Degree of Saturation

Written by Jerry Ratzlaff on . Posted in Geotechnical Engineering

Degree of saturation, abbreviated as S, a dimensionless number, is the ratio of volume of water to the volume of voids.

## Degree of Saturation formulas

 $$\large{ S = \frac{V_w}{V_v } \; 100 }$$ $$\large{ S = \frac{w \; G_s }{ e } }$$

### Where:

$$\large{ S }$$ = degree of saturation (expressed as %)

$$\large{ G_s }$$ = specific gravity of soil

$$\large{ e }$$ = void ratio

$$\large{ V_v }$$ = volume of voids (air and water)

$$\large{ V_w}$$ = volume of water
