# Volumetric Water Content

Written by Jerry Ratzlaff on . Posted in Geotechnical Engineering

Volumetric water content, abbreviated as $$\theta$$, is the ratio of the volume of water to the total volume.

## Volumetric water content formula

 $$\large{ \theta = \frac{V_w}{V_s \;+\; V_w \;+\; V_a} }$$

### Where:

$$\large{ \theta }$$  (Greek symbol theta) = volumetric water content

$$\large{ V_a }$$ = volume of air

$$\large{ V_s }$$ = volume of solid soil

$$\large{ V_w }$$ = volume of water
