Hydraulic Horsepower

on . Posted in Pump

Hydraulic horsepower, abbreviated as \(HHP\), is the power generated by a hydraulic system.  It is a measure of the rate at which a hydraulic system can perform work by moving fluid under pressure.  The concept is particularly relevant in industries where hydraulic systems are commonly used, such as in heavy machinery, industrial equipment, and hydraulic presses.  Understanding hydraulic horsepower is important for selecting the right hydraulic components and designing systems that can meet the power requirements of specific applications.

Keep in mind that this formula provides the theoretical hydraulic power and doesn't account for losses in the system due to factors such as friction, heat, and inefficiencies in components like pumps and motors.  Actual hydraulic power output may be less than the calculated hydraulic horsepower due to these losses.

Hydraulic Horsepower formula

\( HHP =  Q \; p \;/\; 1714 \; \eta_p \)     (Hydraulic Horsepower)

\( Q = HHP \; 1714 \; \eta_p \;/\; p \)

\( p =  HHP \; 1714 \; \eta_p \;/\; Q \)

\( \eta_p =  Q \; p \;/\; HHP \; 1714 \)

Symbol English Metric
\( HHP \) = hydraulic horsepower \(lbf-ft\;/\;sec\) \(J\;/\;s\)
\( Q \) = flow rate \(ft^3\;/\;sec\) \(m^3\;/\;s\)
\( p \) = pressure \(lbf\;/\;in^2\) \( Pa \)
\( \eta_p \)  (Greek symbol eta) = pump efficiency \( dimensionless \)
