Annular Volume Capacity of Pipe

Annular volume capacity of a pipe is the volume of space in the annular area between two cylindrical objects, typically the inner wall of a pipe (outer diameter) and the outer wall of an inner pipe or tool (inner diameter).  This is used in drilling operations to determine the volume of drilling fluid required to fill the annular space.

Annular Volume Capacity of Pipe Formula

\( A_v \;=\;  \pi \cdot \left(    \left( \dfrac{ D_2 }{ 2 } \right)^2   -  \left( \dfrac{ D_1 }{ 2 } \right)^2        \right) \cdot L   \)
Symbol English Metric
\( A_v \) = Annular Volume Capacity \(bbl\) -
\( \pi \) = Pi \(3.141 592 653 ...\)
\( D_2 \) = Inner Dia. of Outer Pipe \(in\) -
\( D_1 \) = Outer Dia. of Inner Pipe \(in\) -
\( L \) = Pipe Length \(ft\) -

Annular Volume Capacity of Pipe Formula

\( A_v \;=\;  \dfrac{ 0.7854 \cdot ( D_2 - D_1 ) \cdot L  }{ 808.5 } \)
Symbol English Metric
\( A_v \) = Annular Volume Capacity \(bbl\) -
\( D_2 \) = Inner Dia. of Outer Pipe \(in\) -
\( D_1 \) = Outer Dia. of Inner Pipe \(in\) -
\( L \) = Pipe Length \(ft\) -
