Water Content
Water content, abbreviated as w, also called moisture content, a dimensionless number, is the ratio of weight of soil to the weight of water or the quantity of water contained in a material.
water content formulas
\(\large{ w = \frac{M_w}{M_s } }\)
\(\large{ w = \frac{W_w}{W_s } }\)
\(\large{ w = \frac{ S \; e }{ G_s } }\) |
Where:
Units | English | Metric |
\(\large{ w }\) = water content (% moisture contemt) | \(\large{dimensionless}\)
\(\large{ S }\) = degree of saturation (expressed as %) | \(\large{dimensionless}\)
\(\large{ M_s} \) = mass of solid | \(\large{lbm}\) | \(\large{kg}\) |
\(\large{ M_w }\) = mass of water | \(\large{lbm}\) | \(\large{kg}\) |
\(\large{ G_s }\) = specific gravity of soil | \(\large{dimensionless}\)
\(\large{ e }\) = void ratio | \(\large{dimensionless}\)
\(\large{ W_s} \) = weight of solid | \(\large{lbf}\) | \(\large{N}\) |
\(\large{ W_w }\) = weight of water | \(\large{lbf}\) | \(\large{N}\) |
