Electromotive Force

Electromotive force, abbreviated as EMF, describe the energy provided by a source of electrical power, such as a battery or a generator.  It is not actually a "force" in the mechanical sense but rather a measure of the potential difference (voltage) generated by a power source when no current flows through the circuit.

Electromotive Force Formula

\( EMF \;=\;  \dfrac{ W }{  Q  }\)
Symbol English Metric
\( EMF \) = Electromotive Force \(V\) -
\( W \) = Work Done \(J\) -
\( Q \) = Charge \(C\) -
