Mud cake, also called filter cake or wall cake, is a thin, low-permeability layer of solid particles that forms on the wall of a wellbore when drilling fluid (mud) is circulated during drilling operations.  It is created as the liquid phase of the drilling mud filtrates into a permeable formation while the suspended solids are deposited on the borehole wall.  The mud cake helps stabilize the wellbore, reduces further fluid loss into the formation, and provides a sealing barrier that limits formation damage and pressure communication between the wellbore and the surrounding rock.

The mud cake properties are typically thin, smooth, tough, and of low permeability, which allows it to minimize filtrate invasion into the formation while maintaining wellbore stability.  Its strength and adhesion help prevent excessive fluid loss and reduce the risk of differential sticking of the drill string.  The uniformity and compressibility of the mud cake influence how well it seals permeable formations and how easily it can be removed during completion or production.  Overall, desirable mud cake properties balance adequate sealing and stability with minimal formation damage and operational risk.
