Pressure Gradient for Drilling

on . Posted in Drilling Engineering

Pressure gradient, abbreviated as \(p_g\), is the rate of change of pressure with respect to distance.  It is typically used to describe pressure variations within a fluid that is not in hydrostatic equilibrium.

Pressure Gradient (Mud Weight \(\;lbm/gal\)) Formula

\( PG \;=\; MW \cdot 0.052  \)     (Pressure Gradient)

\( MW \;=\; \dfrac{ PG }{ 0.052  }\)

Symbol English Metric
\( PG \) = Pressure Gradient \(psi\;/\;ft\) -
\( MW \) = Mud Weight (ppg) \(lbm\;/\;gal\) -

Pressure Gradient (Mud Weight \(\;lbf/ft^3\)) Formula

\( PG \;=\; MW \cdot 0.006944  \)     (Pressure Gradient)

\( MW \;=\; \dfrac{ PG }{ 0.006944  }\)

Symbol English Metric
\( PG \) = Pressure Gradient \(psi\;/\;ft\) -
\( MW \) = Mud Weight \(lbf\;/\;ft^3\) -

Pressure Gradient (Mud Weight \(dimensionless\)) Formula

\( PG \;=\; MW \cdot 0.433  \)     (Pressure Gradient)

\( MW \;=\; \dfrac{ PG }{ 0.433 } \)

Symbol English Metric
\( PG \) = Pressure Gradient \(psi\;/\;ft\) -
\( MW \) = Mud Weight, Specific Gravity \(dimensionless\) -

Convert Pressure Gradient (Mud Weight \(\;lbm/gal\)) Formula
