Effective Pore Volume

on . Posted in Reservoir Engineering

Effective pore volume is the total volume of the interconnected pore spaces within a reservoir rock that can actually store and transmit fluids.  It is used in reservoir engineering as it helps in estimating the amount of recoverable hydrocarbons or water present in the reservoir.  The effective pore volume is essential for estimating the reserves and planning the production strategy of a reservoir.  It provides insight into how much fluid (oil, gas, or water) the reservoir can hold and how much can be potentially extracted.

Effective Pore Volume formula

\( V_{ep} \;=\;  V_{oip} +  V_{gip} + V_{wip}  \)
Symbol English Metric
\( V_{ep} \) = Effective Pore Volume \(in^3\) \(cm^3\)
\( V_{oip} \) = Total Oil Volume in Interconnected Pores \(in^3\) \(cm^3\)
\( V_{gip} \) = Total Gas Volume in Interconnected Pores \(in^3\) \(cm^3\)
\( V_{wip} \) = Total Water Volume in Interconnected Pores \(in^3\) \(cm^3\)
