Hoop stress is the circumferential and perpendicular stress to the axis imposed on a cylinder wall when exposed to an internal pressure load.

 $$\large{ \Delta p_{max} = \frac{ 2 \; \lambda }{ 3 } \; \left( \frac{ t }{ D } \right)^3 }$$

Where:

$$\large{ \Delta p }$$ = change in pressure

$$\large{ D }$$ = outside diameter

$$\large{ t }$$  (Greek symbol sigma) = wall thickness

$$\large{ \lambda }$$  (Greek symbol lambda) = elastic modulus
