Pipe sizing for water is the process of determining the appropriate size or diameter of pipes to be used in a piping system to ensure that an adequate flow of water is delivered to meet the demands of the fixtures and appliances in a building. Proper sizing is crucial for maintaining adequate water pressure and flow throughout the plumbing system. Common hydraulic methods include the Hazen-Williams equation for water-service calculations and the Darcy-Weisbach equation for more general fluid-flow analysis. The selected pipe must provide sufficient flow capacity without producing excessive friction loss or velocity. In practical water piping design, pipe sizing is therefore a balance between flow demand, pressure requirements, velocity limits, friction loss, and economic pipe diameter.
