Comet is an icy, small Solar System body that, when passing close to the Sun, warms and begins to release gases through a process called sublimation.  This activity produces a visible atmosphere, known as a coma, surrounding the comet's solid nucleus, and often one or more tails composed of gas and dust.   A comet is a loose collection of ice, dust, and small rocky particles, typically ranging from a few hundred meters to tens of kilometers across.  Comets are remnants from the formation of the solar system originating primarily from distant regions such as the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud.  When far from the Sun, they remain frozen and inactive; their distinctive features become apparent only near the Sun due to solar heating.
