Shear modulus is a material property that characterizes how a material deforms under shear stress.  It is a measure of the material's resistance to deformation when subjected to forces that act parallel to one of its surfaces while its opposite surfaces are held fixed.

The shear modulus is used in the study of material mechanics and elasticity.  It provides information about how a material responds to shear forces, which are forces that act parallel to a surface or a plane within the material.  Different materials have different shear moduli, reflecting their unique mechanical properties.  In isotropic materials (materials with the same properties in all directions), the shear modulus is related to other elastic constants such as the Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio.
